Hiroshima University Researchers Recognized for Outstanding Achievements Across Diverse Fields with the Selection of a Person of Cultural Merit and the Conferment of the Medal with Purple Ribbon in AY2025 |
At Hiroshima University, its members-including faculty and students-have achieved outstanding results in education, research, and social contribution, earning a wide range of honors and awards.
In fiscal year 2025 in particular, the achievements of Hiroshima University members were widely recognized, with Professor Emeritus Mitiko Miura-Mattausch selected as a Person of Cultural Merit, and Professor Yutaka Idogawa of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
The Person of Cultural Merit award recognizes individuals who have made particularly outstanding contributions to the advancement and development of culture. Professor Miura-Mattausch, who has made major contributions to the establishment of high-precision simulation theory for transistors and its international standardization, as well as distinguished achievements as a pioneer in the field of semiconductors, has been selected as a 2025 Person of Cultural Merit by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

This is the third time that a member of Hiroshima University has been selected as a Person of Cultural Merit, following Tatsuo Morito, the University’s first president (1971), and Yoshinori Kobayashi, a leading authority on kakuhitsu(a stylus that produces depressions to create letters and marks) studies (2019).
The Medal with Purple Ribbon is one of Japan’s national Medals of Honor, awarded by the government and presented by the Emperor to recognize outstanding achievements in science and technology, academia, sports, arts, and culture.
Meanwhile, Professor Idogawa has systematically explored gindei-saiji
(silver-painted porcelain) and has received numerous honors at Japan’s most prestigious public and craft exhibitions, including the Takamatsunomiya Memorial Award at the 62nd Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition. He has also produced original works inspired by everyday vegetables and is contributing to new developments in the craft field.
At Hiroshima University, he has dedicated himself to cultivating the next generation through craft and formative arts education, mentoring many students. His achievements in research, education, and social contribution together reflect the significance of this award.

Including President Mitsuo Ochi, nine individuals associated with Hiroshima University have previously received the Medal with Purple Ribbon, making Idogawa the tenth recipient from the University.
In addition to the recipients introduced here, Hiroshima University has a strong record of numerous other honors and awards. Through a wide range of activities, the University will continue to build on these achievements and pursue further accomplishments in the years ahead.
