A Message from the President on the Publication of the First Issue |

Mitsuo Ochi President, Hiroshima University |

At Hiroshima University, we have defined our mission as ‘establishing a new philosophy of Peace Science-Science for Sustainable Development-and contributing to the realization of a free and peaceful global society that embraces diversity.’ To achieve this mission, we are united in our efforts-faculty, staff, and students working together-while leveraging one of the University's greatest strengths: Convergence of Knowledge, which brings together researchers from all fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.
However, these efforts cannot be accomplished by the University alone. The understanding and cooperation of companies, government agencies, other research institutions, and local communities, and the general public are indispensable. With this in mind, we have launched this email newsletter as a new communication tool to help more people learn about Hiroshima University’s activities and support our mission. We sincerely hope you will subscribe and deepen your connection with Hiroshima University.

Message from Takushi Tanaka of the comedy duo Ungirls, Hiroshima University Ambassador |
|
|
Mr. Takushi Tanaka (School of Engineering, Class of 1999) |
|
|
I entered Hiroshima University in 1995-the year the campus fully relocated to Higashihiroshima City. Back then, the city wasn't quite ready to accommodate the influx of students, and competition for part-time jobs was fierce.
I still laugh when I remember getting fired from my first job at an izakaya on the very first day for being “too slow.”
Every time I visit after graduation, I'm amazed at how much the campus and the city have evolved. It's no longer just educational and research facilities-there are cafes, concert halls, and a growing number of shops around town. I honestly envy today's Hiroshima University students!
When I tell people in Tokyo that I graduated from Hiroshima University, they often respond with, “You must be smart,” which makes me feel proud.
True to its nature as a comprehensive university, Hiroshima University is home to a diverse community of students and faculty, each pursuing their own goals. Its alumni are active in a wide range of fields-not only as researchers and business professionals, but also as comedians, actors, and more.
What makes Hiroshima University special is that it offers not only academic rigor but also an environment where students can learn and grow freely. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend visiting the campus and experiencing its unique atmosphere for yourself. |

This section highlights several of Hiroshima University’s initiatives-projects that may not be widely known but demonstrate the university’s strengths and unique contributions to society.
This edition focuses on Hiroshima University’s efforts and achievements in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As the world strives to achieve the SDGs by 2030, Hiroshima University-guided by its founding principle of “the pursuit of peace”-is actively engaged in international education and research, with a strong emphasis on advancing peace science.
A key milestone in these efforts was the announcement of the President’s Five Initiatives for Peace Sciences-New Peace Science (Creating Peace for Safety and Security) in May 2023. Aimed at establishing a world-class hub for education and research that embodies the concept of “Science for Sustainable Development,” the initiatives outline five priority areas for Hiroshima University to pursue. Through these efforts, the university continues to strengthen its role as an institution that not only studies peace but also actively works to create it. |
|
|
To visualize its contributions to the SDGs and track progress toward them, Hiroshima University actively participates in various international rankings.
In the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia 2025, organized by the UK’s leading higher education magazine Times Higher Education, the university received the highest recognition-winning the Grand Prize in two of ten categories out of more than 500 entries from universities across Asia.
Winning the Grand Prize in two categories marks a first in Japan, and is only the third occasion overall, following Tsinghua University in China and the National University of Singapore. |

Hiroshima University has also continuously participated in the THE Impact Rankings since its inception. From its third edition, the university has entered all 17 SDG categories, demonstrating its commitment to advancing the SDGs as a comprehensive research university.
In the most recent rankings, Hiroshima University placed among the world’s top 100 in seven SDGs, including SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The university also ranked second overall among all universities in Japan and first nationally in two individual SDGs categories, underscoring its strong commitment and steady progress toward achieving the SDGs. |
|
|
Looking ahead, Hiroshima University will continue to make university-wide efforts toward achieving the SDGs. Guided by its founding spirit of “the pursuit of peace,” the university will keep moving forward as a University Creating Peace, striving not only for the achievement of the SDGs by 2030, but also for the realization of a sustainable world beyond. |

Hiroshima University is home to many students who are active both on and off campus, as well as numerous alumni who are making their mark in various fields. In this section, we feature the inspiring voices of HU students and alumni.
